Cozumel is an island and municipality on the Caribbean Sea. It is 48 km long, 16 km wide and, as of 2014, had a population of about 86,000 people. The exquisite beaches (and 15km-long coral reef) of Cozumel receive more than 2 million visitors per year, meaning that Cozumel has a huge tourist-driven economy. A huge amount of cruise ships dock here at Cozumel, and it’s a stunning tourist destination.
The island of Cozumel is usually broken down into 3 main areas: San Miguel, Costera Sur, and Costera Norte. San Miguel has a population of about 77,000 and is the largest city in Cozumel. Costera Sur is a popular place to see the incredible coastal view, snorkel, and scuba dive. Costera Norte begins just above the downtown area and stretches north to the many beaches. It is near Playa San Juan and the Cozumel Airport.
When deciding the best place to stay in Cozumel, there are a few things you’ll need to keep in mind. Consider how close you want to be to the attractions, the beach, the shops, and what kind of experiences you want to have.
