Things to Do on San Cristóbal Island, Galápagos

Updated Jul 16, 2026 · This post may contain affiliate links.

San Cristóbal isn't the busiest island in the Galápagos - that's Santa Cruz. But San Cristóbal has its own airport, its own small, easy-to-love capital in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, and some of the best snorkeling and diving day tours in the entire archipelago. Here's everything worth doing, whether you're staying on-island or heading out for a day trip.

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is San Cristóbal's capital and the political capital of the entire Galápagos province, though it's much smaller and quieter than Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz. The waterfront malecón is the heart of town - a charming boardwalk with restaurants, shops, and a small market. And it's especially famous for the sea lions sprawled all across the benches, storefronts, and docked boats like they pay rent.

It's an easy town to explore on foot, and a great home base for day tours, since most operators are clustered right there along the waterfront.

Playa Mann & Cerro Tijeretas (Frigatebird Hill)

Playa Mann is a small in-town beach just a short walk from the malecón. It's a very popular spot to watch the sea lions and a nice place to enjoy the sunset.

From there, a well-marked trail climbs up Cerro Tijeretas (Frigatebird Hill), a short, easy hike with some nice lookout points. It looks out over a rocky cove where you can often spot both frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies nesting.

At the bottom of the hill there's a small, sheltered cove - Tijeretas Bay - that's a great free snorkeling spot, with a good chance of swimming alongside sea lions. Bring your own gear along for the hike, since there's no rental stand right there.

If you do this full walk/hike from town to see all the sights above, it's approximately 3 miles round trip. You can get the trail map on AllTrails.

El Junco Lagoon

El Junco is a freshwater crater lagoon up in the San Cristóbal highlands, and one of the only permanent freshwater lakes in the entire Galápagos archipelago. It sits at over 2,300 feet elevation, so it's cooler and mistier than down on the coast. (So maybe pack along a light layer.)

A short pathway, about 1 mile roundtrip, circles the crater rim, with views down into the lagoon and, on clear days, out toward the coast. Frigatebirds are known to stop here to bathe and rinse the salt from their feathers!

El Junco is reachable by taxi from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, and it's often combined with a stop at La Galapaguera on the way.

La Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado

La Galapaguera is San Cristóbal's giant tortoise breeding center - the island's answer to the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz. It's a bit further out of town, up in the highlands, and is great place to see the tortoises in a natural setting with trails winding through the habitat.

You'll need a taxi to get there and back, so it's worth pairing with El Junco Lagoon to make the most of your trip up into the highlands.

Book it: If you'd rather not arrange your own taxi, a guided highlands tour is another option. Or ask your hotel to arrange a driver for you!

Popular Day Tours from San Cristóbal

San Cristóbal's biggest draw is what's offshore. These are full-day boat trips that typically include a naturalist guide, snorkeling equipment, and often lunch - and since most of the national park requires a certified guide, these day tours or a liveaboard cruise are the only way to reach these sites.

Kicker Rock (León Dormido)

Kicker Rock, known locally as León Dormido ("sleeping lion"), is a dramatic, split volcanic rock formation jutting straight out of the ocean - and one of the single best snorkeling and diving sites in the Galápagos. You'll snorkel through the narrow channel between the two rock walls, where it's common to spot reef sharks, eagle rays, sea turtles, and schools of tropical fish in the deep, clear water below you.

Most tours pair Kicker Rock with a stop at a nearby beach for lunch and a break from the boat. It's a full day out - expect an early morning departure and a return by mid-afternoon.

Book it: Galapagos San Cristóbal Full Day Kicker Rock Más Playa - a small-group tour covering Kicker Rock plus a beach stop.

360 San Cristóbal Island Tour

If you only have time for one big day out, a "360" tour is a good way to see several highlights at once. These typically combine Kicker Rock with a stop at Witch Hill (Cerro Brujo), a beautiful white-sand beach with sea lions and often flamingos in the lagoon behind it, plus additional snorkeling stops depending on the operator and conditions.

It's a longer day than the Kicker Rock-only tour, with more time on the boat, but it packs in more variety if you want to maximize a single day trip.

Book it: 360 San Cristobal Island Day Tour combines Kicker Rock with Witch Hill and additional snorkel stops.

Isla Lobos

Isla Lobos ("Sea Lion Island") is a small islet just a short boat ride from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, making it one of the easier, lower-key day trips from San Cristóbal. As the name suggests, it's home to a large sea lion colony, along with nesting frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies along a short walking trail.

The snorkeling here is excellent and beginner-friendly, with a good chance of swimming right alongside curious young sea lions. Because it's so close to town, this tour tends to run shorter than the Kicker Rock or 360 tours - a good option if you'd rather not commit to a full day on the water.

Book it: Lobos Islands & Ochoa Beach from San Cristobal Day Tour combines the Isla Lobos walking trail with a snorkel stop and a beach break at Playa Ochoa.

More Galapagos Trip Planning Resources

San Cristóbal makes an easy, walkable base with some of the best snorkeling in the islands right off its own shore - and since it's a common entry point for Galápagos trips, it's a great place to spend your first day or two before heading further into the archipelago.
