Most land-based trips are built around Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal, and Isabela - the three main inhabited islands that offer hotels, restaurants, and tour operators. You can base yourself on just one of these islands, or island-hop between two or three using the inter-island ferries. Here's a little about each island, plus our top hotel picks.

Santa Cruz (Puerto Ayora)
Santa Cruz is the main hub of the Galápagos, where the vast majority of visitors enter the islands via Baltra airport. And the main town, Puerto Ayora is by far the biggest, busiest town in the islands as well.
If you want the widest selection of restaurants, tour operators, and day trips all within walking distance - plus easy access to Tortuga Bay, the Charles Darwin Research Station, and the highland tortoise ranches - this is the most convenient place to base yourself.

If you're willing to trade in-town convenience for scenery, Royal Palm Galapagos sits up in the highlands of Santa Cruz, where you'll find the lava tunnels and wild tortoise habitats. Some rooms come with fireplaces and soaking tubs, and there's an infinity pool, firepits, and great stargazing on site. San Cristóbal (Puerto Baquerizo Moreno)
San Cristóbal's capital is smaller and noticeably quieter than Puerto Ayora, but it more than makes up for it with what's right offshore - some of the best snorkeling and diving in the entire archipelago, including Kicker Rock and Isla Lobos, both reachable on a standard day tour.

It's a quiet, private setting with a short walk into Puerto Villamil for dining. It's consistently rated the best stay on the island. But it only has a few rooms - so book early. For something completely different, Scalesia Lodge is a glamping-style property up in the Isabela highlands, about 20 minutes from town, with safari-style tents, a pool, and a genuinely unique setting on the slopes of a volcano. You'll need to book directly through their website.
